It is based on foundational texts such as the Yi Jing (Book of Changes) and on recognized schools such as the Compass School (Luo Pan) and the Form School.

Its principles include:

• The observation of natural forms (mountains, rivers, landscapes).
• The analysis of cardinal orientations using the Luo Pan compass.
• The integration of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water).
• The trigrams and time cycles (Flying Stars, BaZi, etc.).

Classical Feng Shui is precise, mathematical, and cosmological. It seeks to harmonize the flows of Qi according to nature, time, and space.

Advantage: a rigorous practice faithful to Taoist roots.
Limitation: requires technical knowledge and sometimes complex application.

Modern Feng Shui

Modern Feng Shui, often developed in the West, is a simpler and more intuitive adaptation.

It is often based on symbolic and psychological interpretations.

It includes, for example, Color Feng Shui, Decorative Feng Shui, or simplified versions of the Bagua (systematically aligned with the main entrance instead of using the compass).

It emphasizes:

• Harmonization through interior decoration (shapes, colors, objects).
• The psychology of space: a well-organized environment fosters clarity and serenity.
• Practical advice accessible to everyone, without complex calculations.

Advantage: accessible, playful, and quickly applicable in daily life.
Limitation: may drift away from traditional foundations and lose energetic precision.

In summary

• Classical Feng Shui = tradition, rigor, compass, elements, trigrams, time cycles → an ancestral science of space and Qi.
• Modern Feng Shui = Western adaptation, intuitive, focused on decoration and well-being → a more symbolic and psychological approach.

The two do not oppose each other: they can complement one another. Classical Feng Shui provides depth and precision, while Modern Feng Shui makes Feng Shui accessible and practical for quickly transforming one’s environment.
